The First Three-Wheelers - Late 1850's
1By the mid-nineteenth century, bicycles were a highly popular means of transportation and recreation,
but safety concerns about some high wheel designs led inventors to create the first tricycles,
by converting a boneshaker in the 1860's. While these new three wheeled bikes allowed the rider
to sit on the bike while not moving, they weren't much safer than their two-wheeled counterparts.
The rider's weight remained over the front wheel in such designs and provided only a marginal stability
advantage over boneshakers.

Bicycle-Type Tricycle - mid-1880's
The previous innovation of rear steering chain-driven tricycles was quickly left behind in favor of the older front steering double chain driven variety. About the same time (approx. 1885) as this type of tricycle enjoyed a resurgence of popularity, bicycle-type tricycles came onto the scene. These machines looked virtually identical to simple adult tricycles of the 21st century.
